The 5-second restaurant test for NONG compliance
When you enter any restaurant, smell the air near the kitchen. If you can strongly smell fried onions or garlic, the pans and oil are likely contaminated even if they prepare your dish separately. For truly strict NONG dining, choose restaurants where this smell is absent entirely — usually pure Jain, Vaishnav, or sattvic places.
Which instant noodles are NONG certified?
My kids love instant noodles but every brand I check has garlic or onion powder in the seasoning. Are there any NONG-certified instant noodles available in India?
How to read ingredient labels for hidden onion/garlic
Hidden names to watch for on ingredient labels: 'Dehydrated onion', 'Onion powder', 'Onion extract', 'Garlic powder', 'Garlic extract', 'Natural flavours' (often contains onion/garlic derivatives), 'Yeast extract' (can contain onion), 'Hydrolyzed vegetable protein' (may include onion/garlic). When in doubt, use the NoNgs Label Reader tool or email the manufacturer.
FODMAP and NONG — what's the overlap?
I've recently been diagnosed with IBS and my doctor recommended a low-FODMAP diet. I also avoid onion and garlic for personal reasons. How much overlap is there between NONG and low-FODMAP?
Great news — there's huge overlap! Onion and garlic are the TOP two high-FODMAP foods, so every NONG product is automatically low in those FODMAPs. The NONG diet naturally eliminates the most problematic FODMAP triggers. Additional FODMAP considerations beyond NONG: watch out for wheat in large amounts, certain legumes, and some fruits. But for the core FODMAP elimination, NONG products are your best starting point.
