About the NONG Label Reader

Reading a packaged-food label for onion and garlic is harder than it looks. Alliums hide behind generic terms like natural flavour, seasoning, masala and stock, and onion or garlic powder can appear anywhere in a long ingredient list. The label reader takes the full list you paste from any packet and checks every entry against our verified No Onion No Garlic database — covering onion, garlic, shallots, leeks, chives, spring onions and their derivatives — so you get a clear per-ingredient verdict instead of squinting at fine print.

It is built for anyone following a Jain, Vaishnav, satvik, Ayurvedic or low-FODMAP diet who needs to know, at a glance, whether a product is safe. For a single ingredient, use the ingredient checker; to look up a packaged product by name, use the product scanner.

How to use the label reader

  1. 01

Find the ingredient list on the packet

Turn any packaged food over and locate the printed ingredient list on the back or side label — usually under a heading such as Ingredients or Contains.

  2. 02

    Copy and paste the ingredients

Type or paste the full ingredient list into the box above, separating each ingredient with a comma or a new line exactly as printed on the packet.

  3. 03

    Check every ingredient at once

Select Check All Ingredients and each entry is matched against our verified No Onion No Garlic database, including every member of the Allium genus and its hidden derivatives.

  4. 04

    Read the colour-coded verdict

Green marks a NONG safe ingredient, red marks one that is not NONG, and yellow flags an ingredient you should verify manually with the manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the NONG label reader check for?

The label reader checks every ingredient you paste for onion, garlic and every other member of the Allium genus — including shallots, leeks, chives and spring onions — in any form, whether fresh, dried, powdered, extracted, or infused. Each ingredient is returned as NONG safe, not NONG, or uncertain.

How do I read a food label with this tool?

Find the printed ingredient list on the back or side of the packet, copy it exactly as written, and paste it into the box. Separate ingredients with commas or new lines and select Check All Ingredients to get a per-ingredient verdict.

What do the green, red and yellow verdicts mean?

Green means the ingredient is NONG safe and free of onion, garlic and other alliums. Red means it contains or is derived from an allium and is not NONG. Yellow means the status is uncertain — typically flavourings, stocks and masala blends that may hide allium derivatives — so you should verify it with the manufacturer.

Why are some ingredients marked uncertain?

An ingredient is marked uncertain when its NONG status depends on the brand or how it is processed. Compound items such as natural flavours, seasoning, masala blends and stocks may or may not contain hidden onion or garlic derivatives, so the reader flags them for manual verification rather than guessing.

Does a NONG safe label mean the product is Jain?

NONG safe means free of onion, garlic and other alliums, which is a core requirement of a Jain diet. A strict Jain diet also avoids other root and underground vegetables such as potato, carrot and ginger, so a clean NONG label alone does not guarantee a product is fully Jain — check the product's detail page for its complete diet tags.

Is the label reader free to use?

Yes. The NONG label reader is completely free with no sign-up required. Paste and check as many food labels as you like.
