FODMAP and NONG — what's the overlap?
I've recently been diagnosed with IBS and my doctor recommended a low-FODMAP diet. I also avoid onion and garlic for personal reasons. How much overlap is there between NONG and low-FODMAP?
Great news — there's huge overlap! Onion and garlic are the TOP two high-FODMAP foods, so every NONG product is automatically low in those FODMAPs. The NONG diet naturally eliminates the most problematic FODMAP triggers. Additional FODMAP considerations beyond NONG: watch out for wheat in large amounts, certain legumes, and some fruits. But for the core FODMAP elimination, NONG products are your best starting point.
Is asafoetida (hing) NONG safe?
I've been using hing in my cooking as a substitute for onion and garlic. But I've heard some brands mix garlic powder into their hing. Which brands are truly NONG safe?
Great question! Most compounded hing (the common yellow powder) DOES contain garlic powder. For truly NONG hing, look for 'pure' or 'compound-free' hing. Brands like LG Hing, Catch Pure Hing, and Vandevi Pure Hing are tested and garlic-free. Always check if the label says 'Pure Asafoetida' vs just 'Compounded Asafoetida'.
Can I eat out at a regular restaurant during Paryushan?
Paryushan is coming up and I follow strict Jain dietary rules — no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables, no eating after sunset. Is it safe to eat at regular restaurants, or should I stick to Jain-certified places only?
During Paryushan, be extra cautious. Even if a restaurant says they'll make it without onion/garlic, cross-contamination from the same pan/oil is common. Best options: (1) Stick to Jain-certified restaurants, (2) Carry home-cooked food, (3) If eating out, choose pure Jain or Vaishnav restaurants that have dedicated cooking equipment. Many restaurants in Gujarat and Mumbai advertise full Jain menus during Paryushan.
Which instant noodles are NONG certified?
My kids love instant noodles but every brand I check has garlic or onion powder in the seasoning. Are there any NONG-certified instant noodles available in India?
Most instant noodles use garlic/onion in their masala. Options: (1) Buy plain noodles and make your own NONG seasoning with cumin, coriander, hing, and basic spices. (2) Some local brands like 'Jain Noodles' from Gujarat are available online. (3) Maggi plain atta noodles sometimes work but check each batch as the recipe varies.
