Frequently Asked Questions
What does the NONG product scanner check for?
The scanner checks whether a packaged food is No Onion No Garlic — completely free of onion, garlic, and every other member of the Allium genus such as shallots, leeks, chives and spring onions, in any form, whether fresh, dried, powdered, extracted, or infused.
How do I scan a product?
Use the Search by Name tab to look up a product by its name, brand, or category and see whether it is NONG verified. To check an item that is not in our database, switch to the Check Ingredients tab and paste the ingredient list from the packet for a full per-ingredient analysis.
What do the safe, not NONG, and uncertain verdicts mean?
NONG safe means the ingredient is free of onion, garlic and other alliums. Not NONG means it contains or is derived from an allium. Uncertain means the status depends on the brand or processing — for example flavourings, stocks and masala blends that may hide allium derivatives — so you should verify with the manufacturer.
Is a NONG verified product also Jain?
NONG verified means free of onion, garlic and other alliums, which is a core requirement of a Jain diet. A strict Jain diet also avoids other root and underground vegetables such as potato, carrot and ginger, so a NONG verified label alone does not guarantee a product is fully Jain — check the product's detail page for its full diet tags.
Is the scanner free to use?
Yes. The NONG product scanner is completely free, with no sign-up required. Search as many products and check as many ingredient lists as you like.
