Andhra Style Spinach Dal

Method

    Take 1 cup toor dal, wash 2-3 times. Add water and soak for 15-20 minutes.

    Wash 250g palak (spinach) well and clean. Cut into small pieces.

    Drain the soaked dal water. Transfer dal to a cooker.

    Add 3 green chillies (cut), chopped ginger, 1½ tsp salt, 1 tsp cumin seeds, ½ tsp turmeric powder, 2 chopped tomatoes, and chopped palak.

    Add 2 cups water and 1 tsp ghee. Mix everything well.

    Close the cooker and cook for 3 whistles on low flame.

    After half an hour, check if dal is cooked well. Mash and mix well with a spoon.

    For tempering: Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan. Add ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds, 1 tsp mustard seeds, and 1 tsp cumin seeds. Let them crackle.

    Add 2 dry red chillies and some curry leaves. Fry for 1 minute on low flame.

    Add the cooked dal to the tempering. Add ¼ cup water from the cooker. Mix well on low flame.

    Add 1 tbsp tamarind pulp (soaked in water) and mix.

    The Palakura Pappu is ready - no extra spices needed, made with simple home ingredients.

    Serve with ghee rice or paratha.
